Scheduling Your Visit
Safety City is a popular education destination. Currently, reservations are for 2nd grade school groups. There is no cost to attend. Reserve your visit as far in advance as possible. The best method for scheduling your visit is to complete the reservation form at the bottom of this page. Due to the tight scheduling, reservations are made on a first come, first serve basis. You will receive a confirmation email prior to your visit and reminder email or call roughly one week before your visit. Should it be necessary to cancel your visit, please notify the Safety City staff no later than 8:15 AM on the day of your visit. If school is canceled due to inclement weather, every attempt to reschedule will be made. Safety City is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday, by reservation only.
Due to the size limitation of our classroom, we can accept no more than 30 students per visit.
Teachers and Volunteers
Each visit should ideally include 1-3 teachers or 1-2 teachers and 1 volunteer. We do not have the space for more volunteers than this. All volunteers will be assigned to a workstation and should not bring other children. We also request that volunteers do not leave the property during the program. We count on our teachers and volunteers to participate and assist us throughout the day, especially when we go outdoors. For our students’ safety, we do not allow parents to enter the building or driving course after we have started our day. If you are picking up your child at the end of the day, we will meet you in the parking lot.
Everyone visiting Safety City should wear comfortable clothing and dress according to the weather. Closed-toe shoes are strongly encouraged for students.
All busing arrangements should be made through the principal's office at your school or with parents directly. We do not arrange transportation for visitors.
We are located at 1160 Red Mile Place, off Red Mile Road, between Central Equipment and Fayette Seed. Once you turn on Red Mile Place, drive past the Family Care Center and the Fayette Ag Extension Office. We are the next building on your left and you’ll see our mini city in the back.
What to expect during the day
Depending on your travel arrangements, we can start the day at 9 am or 9:30 am and end the day at 1 pm or 1:30 pm. If you need to arrive later or leave earlier, please let us know. We will cover safety topics ranging from fire, traffic, pedestrian, school bus, and bicycle safety in the first half of the day. We will schedule a 30 minute lunch break for your students. If the weather permits, we take the students outside after lunch to drive the mini-cars and apply their knowledge. Restroom visits should be made prior to class times with two students at a time visiting the restroom.
We request that schools provide a bagged lunch for their students. Lunch will be held in the classroom.
Name tags should be worn by all students, teachers, and volunteers if possible.
Special Needs Students
Please make us aware of any children with special needs such as broken arm, hearing impairment, inability to speak English, A.D.D., or other circumstance. Please provide an aide to assist students in a wheelchair around Safety City.
Scheduling is best done through the form below.
Please check the calendar to see if the dates you want are available prior to sending a request.
(Note: As of 1/01/16 much of the Spring 2016 semester has been booked. Schools are already making reservations for Fall 2016. Please request your visits well in advance.)
